Cotton plays an important role in the Indian economy as the country's textile industry is predominantly cotton based. India is one of the largest producers as well as exporters of cotton yarn. As of August 2010, India had about 11 million hectares under cotton cultivation and produced 32.5 million bales (170 kg each) of cotton, making it the second-largest producer of cotton worldwide in 2009-10. The states of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu are the major cotton producers in India.
Key Markets and Export Destinations
India accounted for about 4 per cent of global textiles and clothing trade in 2009.
- In 2009, India was the third-largest supplier of textiles and clothing to the US, after China and Vietnam.
- Textile and clothing products worth US$ 2.43 billion and textiles worth US$0.99 billion were exported from India to the US during January - May 2010,registering year-on-year growth rates of 11.62 per cent and 25.24 per cent,respectively.
- During January-May 2010, India stood firmly as the third-largest supplier of textiles and clothing to the EU, after China and Turkey.
- India exported textile and clothing products worth US$ 3.79 billion and textile worth US$ 1.19 billion to the EU markets during January-May 2010, registering year-on-year growth rates of 1.62 per cent and 11.75 per cent, respectively.
- The top six export destinations for Indian cotton textiles in 2009-10 were the US (23 per cent), Bangladesh (5 per cent), Germany (4 per cent), South Korea (4 per cent), the UAE (4 per cent) and the UK (4 per cent).
- Cotton yarn, fabric and made-ups such as bed linen, towels, bath linen and cushion covers form a bulk of the exports. In 2009-10, cotton made-ups, yarn and fabric accounted for 50 per cent, 28 per cent and 22 per cent of total cotton textile exports, respectively.
Various reputed foreign retailers and brands such as Carrefour, Gap, H&M, JC Penney, Levi Strauss, Macy's, Marks & Spencer, Metro Group, Nike, Reebok,Tommy Hilfiger and WaI-Mart import Indian textile products.
Cotton Textile Export Promotion Council
The Cotton Textile Promotion Council (TEXPROCIL) takes part in national and international events to enhance the visibility of Indian products, advertises and promotes Indian products in various media vehicles such as fashion magazines, event-related pull-outs, India reports and leading trade magazines, and organizes buyer-seller meets (BSM) and trade delegation visits.
