Gujarat is recognised as one of the leading industrial states in India, augmenting the growth of the services sector and leading to immense prosperity for its people. The state's manufacturing sector has been instrumental in its growth and development, with the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector playing a key role in shaping the manufacturing industry.
Gems & Jewellery is one of the fastest growing sectors in the country. The state of Gujarat has the distinction of being the world's second largest producer of gold jewellery, contributing the highest share (85 per cent) to the total national jewellery production. With eight out of 10 diamonds in the world being polished in Surat, it is known as the 'Diamond Capital of the World' having the world's largest diamond processing hub with a 72 per cent world share and 80 per cent of the Indian market.

- Contributes about 53 per cent to national production of chemicals (2005-06).
- Is India's highest contributor of man-made fibre (31 per cent) and man-made filament yarn (38 per cent).
- Contributes to over 9 per cent to India’s total engineering output.
- Accounts for 28 per cent of national pharmaceutical production (2006-07); exports worth US$ 1.4 billion (2006-07).
Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), a cooperative dairy giant, has clocked a turnover of US$ 1.05 billion during fiscal year 2006-07 to become the first billion dollar cooperative in India.
