The state of Uttar Pradesh (UP) is located in the heart of India. Uttar Pradesh can be divided into two distinct regions, the southern hills and the Gangetic plains. The Ganga and the Yamuna are the two major rivers flowing through the state.
Uttar Pradesh is the largest producer of wheat, pulses, sugarcane, tobacco, potato and milk and also has important industries including sugar and cotton fabrics. It also has the largest share of Small Scale Industrial (SSI) units, and is the fourth largest exporter of software in the country.
The state is ranked amongst the top tourist destinations in India, largely by virtue of being home to one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Taj Mahal.

State Presentation (2007)
Uttar Pradesh (UP) is the second largest economy in India after Maharashtra, contributing 8.17 per cent to India's total GDP.
The largest producer of wheat, sugarcane, tobacco and potato, Uttar Pradesh's contribution to India's total production varies from 30 to 50 per cent. The state also has one of the highest irrigation intensities at 66 per cent.
